Credit card surcharge

From 1 July 2016 a surcharge applies to all credit card payments to the NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages to recoup merchant interchange fees.

The NSW Government requires all agencies to recoup these fees through surcharging when payments are accepted using credit cards.

Surcharge rates

The following surcharge rates apply to the different types of credit cards accepted by us.  Surcharge rates are based on cost-recovery only.

Card type Surcharge percentage
Visa 0.4%
Mastercard 0.4%
American Express 1.4%

Alternative payment methods

A surcharge is not payable to other methods of payment including cheque, money order, cash and eftpos payments accepted using ATM cards issued by banks and other deposit taking institutions.

How much extra will I need to pay?

We have a variety of fees for products and services payable for different application types, and it is not possible to show all the surcharge amounts. To calculate exactly how much you will need to pay when using a credit card, use the following method:

  • For Visa and Mastercard payments, multiply the amount of your fee by 1.004 to calculate the total payable including the surcharge. Example: surcharge on $53 is 21 cents.
  • For American Express payments, multiply the amount of your fee by 1.014 to calculate the total payable including the surcharge. Example: surcharge on $53 is 74 cents.

Why is the surcharge being charged?

Merchant interchange fees are incurred by government agencies when they accept credit card payments from the public or customers. All NSW Government agencies are required to impose surcharges to recoup the merchant interchange fees incurred when accepting credit card payments from the public or customers. Surcharge rates are based on cost-recovery only.
