Dame Mary Gilmore

Mary Jean Cameron was born on 16 August 1865 at Cotta Walla near Goulburn, NSW. She campaigned for a wide range of social and economic reforms and became a prominent Australian socialist poet and journalist.

In 1962 aged 97, Gilmore passed away and received the first state funeral for a writer since the death of Henry Lawson in 1922.

Her image appeared in the Australian $10 note, along with her portrait painted by the well-known Australian Artist Sir William Dobell.

The Canberra suburb of Gilmore and the federal electorate of Gilmore are named after her.
