    The Registry conducts wedding ceremonies at a number of locations around Sydney. We offer affordable wedding options for couples seeking an intimate experience and look after all the legal requirements from ceremony to certificate. 

    Before your wedding

    You must arrange a marriage interview at the Registry. A marriage officer will use this interview to verify your supporting documents and start planning for your ceremony. 

    Marriage interview

    Both parties must be present at the marriage interview. You must complete and bring the following forms to lodge at the interview: 

    • Application for a Registry marriage
    • Notice of Intended marriage

    Please note a Notice of Intended Marriage is valid for up to 18 months. If the parties are unsure of a date for their ceremony, this can be arranged later on. 

    Fees

    Costs below include the fee to lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage ($166) and issue of standard marriage certificate ($58).

    Identification

    Both parties must provide their original birth certificate and/or a current passport. If a passport cannot be provided, other current photo ID can be accepted.

    If you have been previously married, you must provide evidence of the termination of the marriage in the form of an original of your final divorce papers or a death certificate (if you have been widowed).

    All documents must be originals. If they are not in English, a qualified interpreter must have translated them. The wedding ceremony date and time will be booked once all of these documents have been provided.

    Cancellations

    The ceremony fee can be refunded if a notice to cancel is received at least 14 days before the ceremony date or Notice of Intended Marriage expiry date.

    If a notice to cancel or change the date of a marriage ceremony is received less than 14 days prior to the ceremony date, a refund will not be issued. For more information see our Refunds Policy [PDF 465kb]

    The Notice of Intended Marriage Lodgement fee is not refundable. 

    Your wedding ceremony

    It is essential the wedding party arrives 15 minutes prior to the appointed ceremony time and report to reception. The ceremony takes around 15 to 20 minutes where:

    • both parties sign declarations stating they are over 18 years of age, not legally married to someone else and are not directly related to each other
    • vows are exchanged. Parties may also exchange wedding rings if they desire
    • the certificate of marriage is signed by both parties, two witnesses and then presented to the married couple. 

    Witnesses 

    You are legally required to have two witnesses at your wedding ceremony to witness and sign the marriage certificate. The Registry does not supply witnesses.

    Your witnesses:

    • must be 18 years or older
    • know either party
    • speak and understand English.

    Interpreters 

    If agreed during your marriage interview that an interpreter is required, the parties must arrange for this in order for the ceremony to take place. The Registry does not supply interpreters.
