Marriage Certificates

Married in NSW

For marriages that occurred in NSW, the certificate we provide is the official certified copy of the registration data.

Before a Marriage Certificate can be produced, your marriage must be registered. Your civil or religious marriage celebrant will register the marriage on your behalf.

Australia Post Applications
You can apply for a marriage certificate in person at a participating Australia Post outlet.

Who Can Apply

In NSW, Marriage Certificates are only available to the bride and groom named on the certificate or their authorised representative.

If you are the bride or groom named on the certificate, the certificate can be issued to you.

If you are a child of the bride or groom, the certificate can be issued to you if the bride and groom are deceased.

  • Please provide at least three (3) forms of your identification (either the bride or groom, not both).

If you are not the bride or groom named on the certificate or their child, you must satisfy one of the following conditions:

  1. Provide written authority and at least three (3) forms of identification from the bride or groom named on the certificate, plus your own identification.
  2. Show Power of Attorney relating to the bride or groom named on the certificate.
  3. Be a solicitor/welfare group acting for or in the interests of the bride or groom named on the certificate.

Solicitors Applying For a Certificate

Where solicitors apply for certificates on behalf of clients, they must provide:

  1. a letter on company letterhead stating the reason required ("legal" is not sufficient; a specific reason is needed i.e. Probate, Estate Administration, etc), together with the name of the client for whom the solicitor is acting.
  2. The letter must be accompanied by:
    - a completed application form, and
    - a copy of your Law Society ID Card or Practising Certificate.
  3. Solicitor's name must be written in the Applicant's Details section. Payment must be made with a company or trust cheque, or company credit card.
