| Birth registered in NSW
People whose birth is registered in NSW who have undergone a sex affirmation procedure may apply to have their new sex recorded
on their Birth Certificate.
The new Birth Certificate will not disclose
that a sex change has taken place.
If you have changed your name since your birth was first
registered, an endorsement will appear on the new certificate stating
that your birth was 'Previously registered in another
name'.
Your birth record will be re-registered in the current year showing the new sex.
Access to your original birth record is restricted by legislation.
Birth not registered in Australia
People whose birth is not registered in Australia and who are an Australian Citizen or permanent resident of Australia and who live and have lived for at least one (1) year in NSW, who have undergone a sex affirmation procedure may apply to register a change of sex.
Once a change of sex is registered a Recognised Details Certificate can be issued. The recognised details certificate will record your new sex and current name.
Who Can Apply
To alter the birth register to record a change of sex, you must be:
- aged 18 years or older or be the parents of a child (or a parent if the applicant is a sole parent) or the guardian of a child and,
- whose birth is registered in NSW,
- who has undergone a sex affirmation procedure,
- who is not married.
To register a change of sex, you must be:
- aged 18 years or older or be the parents of a child (or a parent if the applicant is a sole parent) or the guardian of a child and,
- whose birth is not registered in Australia,
- who is an Australian Citizen or permanent resident of Australia,
- who lives and has lived for at least one year in NSW,
- who has undergone a sex affirmation procedure,
- who is not married.
Your application to record a change of sex or to register a change of sex must be accompanied by statutory declarations from two (2) Medical Practitioners who are registered in Australia, confirming that the sex affirmation procedure has occurred.
Cost
Registering a Change of Sex $113.00
This fee includes the issue of a new Standard Birth Certificate or Recognised Details Certificate. Certificates are distributed through Registered Post and cost shown includes postage and handling.
If you also wish to formally change your name, the usual Registry fees and procedures for a Change of Name will apply.
Using the new Birth Certificate
Your new Birth Certificate can be used in Australia.
In jurisdictions where a change of sex is not legally recognised, you cannot use your new Birth Certificate. In these jurisdictions you must tell the person relying on your certificate that your gender has been changed or use your old Birth Certificate.
Application Form Recording a change of sex on a Birth Certificate and Registering a Change of Sex requires particular documentation including:
- Applicant's Statutory Declaration and ,
- Supporting Statutory Declarations (x 2), completed and signed by two Medical Practitioners verifying that you have undergone a sex affirmation procedure and ,
- At least three forms of the applicant's identification and ,
- Payment details form
Print and complete the application form, and mail to the Registry with payment details and certified copies of identification.

- Change of Sex born in NSW
- Recognised Details Certificate
to register a change of sex if your birth is registered outside Australia
