Provide Who We Are
The NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages is a Government
Trading Enterprise and a business unit within the New South
Wales Attorney-General's Department.
The Registry is responsible for the administration of the
Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act, 1995
and the Commonwealth Marriage Act, 1961 for the state
of New South Wales.
The Registry funds expenditure and capital investment from
revenue generated from certificate applications and other
services. The Registry also pays a dividend to Treasury from
pre-tax profit.
Role of the Registry
The Registry registers New South Wales life events accurately
and securely for all time, ensuring their integrity and confidentiality.
This includes the registration of births, deaths and marriages
and official changes of name and sex.
We identify, then meet the varied and valid needs of our
customers by providing a range of certificates, products and
information services that help establish a range of legal
entitlements.
The Registry also provides accurate and reliable data for
planning and research to the Australian Institute of Health
and Welfare (AIHW) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics
(ABS).
