Who We Are

The NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages is a Government Trading Enterprise and a business unit within the New South Wales Attorney-General's Department.

The Registry is responsible for the administration of the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act, 1995 and the Commonwealth Marriage Act, 1961 for the state of New South Wales.

The Registry funds expenditure and capital investment from revenue generated from certificate applications and other services. The Registry also pays a dividend to Treasury from pre-tax profit.

Role of the Registry

The Registry registers New South Wales life events accurately and securely for all time, ensuring their integrity and confidentiality. This includes the registration of births, deaths and marriages and official changes of name and sex.

We identify, then meet the varied and valid needs of our customers by providing a range of certificates, products and information services that help establish a range of legal entitlements.

The Registry also provides accurate and reliable data for planning and research to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Vision of the Registry

To be a world leader in the innovative management and provision of personal information services.

The Registry operates under the following values:

  • Customer focus

Every aspect of our business is conducted with sensitivity in the knowledge that the information we record and release concerns significant personal and emotional events in people's lives.
