You can apply for a certificate if the birth occurred in NSW.

A standard birth certificate is an official cer​tified cop​y of the registration data held by the Registry, and is commonly used to help establish a person's identity. More information:

Standard birth certificate. Add $25 for Priority processing.

Commemorative package: includes standard certificate. Add $25 for Priority processing.

All certificates are distributed through Registered Post (except Family History) and include postage and handling. However, this does not ensure next day delivery.

New birth: Priority processing is not available for a certificate for a new birth. 

Who can apply

If you are the person named on the certificate or a parent of the person, please provide:

  • at least three forms of your ID with your application.

If you are not the person named on the certificate or their parent, you must satisfy one of the following conditions:

Proof of identification (ID) 

To protect your privacy, the Registry requires proof of your identity. All certificate applications must be accompanied by ID.

  • If you are the person named on the certificate, or a parent of the person named on the certificate, the birth certificate can be issued to you.

If you DO meet the above criteria, please provide:

  • three forms of your own ID (see below).

If you DON'T meet the above criteria, please provide:

  • Letter of Authority, giving permission to apply, from the person named on the certificate or their parent. Include their address, daytime telephone number and signature.
  • three forms of ID from the person giving permission (see below).
  • three forms of your own ID (see below).

Identification

Please provide at least three forms of ID, one of each from Categories 1, 2 and 3. If you are unable to provide ID from Categories 1 and 2, you must still provide at least three forms of ID. At least two of these must be from Category 3.
