Marriage Certificates - Proof of Identity
To protect your privacy, the Registry requires proof of your identity. All certificate applications must be accompanied by identification.
  • If you are the bride or the groom named on the certificate, the marriage certificate can be issued to you. If you are a child of the bride or the groom, the certificate can be issued to you if the bride and groom are deceased.

If you DO meet the above criteria, please provide:

  • Three (3) forms of your own identification (see below).

If you DO NOT meet these criteria, please:

Identification

When attending an Australia Post outlet, ensure you bring sufficient identification.

  • All documents must be current (except foreign passports, which may be expired by up to two (2) years).
  • Documents must be original. Photocopies will not be accepted.

Acceptable proof of identity document combinations

  • one (1) from Category 1 plus
    one (1) from Category 2 plus
    one (1) from Category 3
 

OR

 
  • one (1) from Category 1 plus
    two (2) from Category 3
 

OR

 
  • one (1) from Category 2 plus
    two (2) from Category 3

 


Your proof of identity documents must show your current residential address.

If none of your proof of identity documents show an address, you must also provide a recent document from Category 4.

If documents are not in your current name then a Change of Name document (Australian Marriage Certificate, Decree Nisi (Divorce Papers) or Certificate of Registration of Name Change) will be needed to support your application.

Category 3

 If born in Australia:

  • An Australian Birth Certificate

 Record of immigration status:

  • Citizenship Certificate
  • New Zealand Citizenship Certificate together with passport
  • New Zealand Birth Certificate
  • Medicare Card
  • Credit or Debit Card
  • Centrelink or Department of Veterans Affairs Card
  • Security/Crowd Control Licence
  • Tertiary Education Institution ID Card
Category 2
Category 4
  • Australian Driver's Licence
  • Australian Passport
  • Firearms Licence
  • Foreign Passport
  • Recent document with current residential address, eg
    • Utility account
